Dell, Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) awarded TFA with a grant through their GLBT employee group, Dell Pride. Partnering for Respect of Individuality in the Dell Environment (PRIDE) is the chartered Networking Group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) employees.
The $1,000 will be used pursuant to the mission of TFA: Improving the life of transgender people.
TFA was notified that of Dell’s support on January 14, 2010.
This is wonderful, there are so many good reasons to become better informed about the LGBT community. Hats off to Dell for this grant.

I became the coordinator for the trans in the Caribbean our group is called (REGIONALCARIBBEAN TRANS in ACTION) this group got formed just last sep 2009 by the ILGHRC and CVC and other funders we have been facing many faces in the caribbean that it is time to start being VISIBLE and to hear about the Dell, inc Grant it is very inportant for us as a TRANS group to hear possitive and empowering. Dell Foundation says we can’t apply for a grant if it is of a civic, political or religious nature, but it allows a special grant for being a poor gay, lesbian or transgender? What I believe teaches me not to judge, but it seems that Dell is doing what many others do — accept when it gains you acceptance — but without looking at the real truth. I’m sorry, this seems so two-faced! The poor are still poor, whether they are transgender or not. Poor people still need counseling and other programs. Nothing should stop our giving to the poor. Perhaps if we have to accept gay, lesbian and transgender as normal, we should we also accept being poor and suffering as normal and just accept it? Or should we look at the way God intended things? Think about it. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist, it takes a reasonable human loving and respecting God, our Creator, and studying what He wants for us!! We all have our sufferings and trials. No man or woman is given more than we can handle. How we help makes all the difference! Acceptance can sometimes be a cop out. the right kind of help never is! Again, think about it!
@Linda: A “special grant” would be a grant that is made outside their stated targets. If you are a civic, political or religious organization, you would have a “special grant” if you were funded. What the TG Center received was a normal grant. To refer to a grant inline with their funding objectives as being somehow “special” seems linguistically disingenuous.
Decrying that any funding ever reaches the trans population seems quite elitist. Non-transgender funding is prolific and comprises almost the entire bulk of all funding in the entire world. Pretending that the trans population has the same access to social and/or medical services is simply an obtuse understanding of reality. Begrudging the TG community this grant seems small, judgmental and hubris all at the same time.
I’m not sure what point your trying to make. You seem to be saying that you feel that everyone should take on what your particular view of your particular sect of your particular religion believes because not agreeing with you is a sin.

@Jenn: You can’t apply for it. We didn’t apply for it. Dell approves and then contacts you. Dell approached us.
I agree! If you’re gay, lesbian or bisexual, finding medical care is easy. But as a TG person, first you have to find a primary care physician who will treat you as a human being and not like A) a science experiment or B) a freak of nature. That is, of course, if they say that they will treat you at all due to their “moral obligations.” Then it’s time to find a therapist, one who is not biased by the religion (aka Christian therapy), or by preconceived notions about what the TG community is. Finding someone with experience treating TG people whose calendar is not already filled up because there are not enough qualified therapists to handle the load is the biggest challenge. Then once you decide that you want to transition, you try and find an endocrinologist to regulate your hormones, and finding someone with the right kind of experience in this can be hard, especially if you live in the Bible belt. Top it all off, when it is time to get your Gender Confirming Surgery, you have your choice of, let’s see, 5 or 6 qualified surgeons in the US, so if you don’t live in Philadelphia, Colorado or Arizona, lets fly there for a consult, fly home, fly there for the surgery, recoup, then fly home, back and forth for check-ups. And once you’re post-op, good luck finding an OB/GYN who can even fathom what kind of mechanics are going on down there.
This grant, while appreciated, won’t honestly do anything for the TG community. It’s like a family of four sitting down to dinner and finding out that the only food available is a single raisin. It’s a nice gesture, but maybe next time they should consider if the donation is even going to do anything for the community.
